Cliff R. spent years in and out of AA meetings, but never once told anyone about the 8 minutes. Those 8 minutes were the only time he felt like he was enough—a fleeting window of peace after drinking that kept him chasing the bottle, even as he destroyed his family night after night. In this AA speaker tape, he walks through what it was like to be a raging alcoholic at home, raising his kids in what he calls an insane asylum, and the turning point that finally broke the cycle.

Quick Summary

Cliff R. describes his alcoholism as a search for relief: the 8 minutes after drinking when he felt okay, before the cycle of family destruction would start again. He shares what it was like to be a violent, abusive drunk every night at home, modeling the same chaos he grew up with. This AA speaker tape explores how the obsession with those brief moments of peace kept him trapped until he finally got honest in recovery.

Episode Summary

Cliff R. opens with a striking image: sitting in a 1958 Chevy on an abandoned school lot, finishing a half-pint of liquor, waiting for the 8 minutes. That’s what he’s chasing. After about thirty minutes of drinking, something shifts—his mind quiets, his shame lifts, everything feels manageable. For 8 minutes, he is enough. Then it ends, and he goes home and destroys everything.

He spent years moving in and out of AA meetings, sitting in those rooms, and never once mentioned the 8 minutes. That’s the piece he kept hidden. The thing that made sense of his drinking, the thing that explained why he kept going back.

Cliff grew up in what he calls an insane asylum—a chaotic, damaged family. He swore he’d be different as a father. Instead, he made his parents look good. By the late 1960s, with three kids in high school, he was drinking heavily every night at home. He was a raging alcoholic, violent and abusive, mean-spirited and sarcastic. The house became a place of constant chaos and fear. His oldest son, trying to survive in that environment, was working his way through high school as a hashish dealer—never needing spending money because his father was hitting him up for alcohol instead. The kid had long hair and a perpetual nod of resignation.

The talk doesn’t shy away from the reality of what addiction does to a family. Cliff’s honesty about what he became—the violence, the rage, the abuse masked by sarcasm and meanness—is unflinching. He doesn’t softpedal it or ask for sympathy. This is what I did.

What makes this AA speaker meeting powerful is that Cliff is naming the mechanism of his addiction: not the grand despair of hitting bottom in a gutter, but the smaller, more insidious trap of temporary relief. The 8 minutes felt like proof that he wasn’t hopeless, that the drinking actually worked, that he could manage. It was the lie that kept him coming back, night after night, destroying the people who loved him, all for those 8 minutes of feeling okay.

The talk cuts to the heart of what keeps people trapped in active addiction: the belief that the drug is working, that it solves the problem, even as the evidence of devastation accumulates all around. It’s not until someone gets honest about what they’re really chasing—and stops lying about it—that recovery becomes possible.

And I finished that half a pint and uh I would sit there in the darkness of that '58 Chevy of mine on an abandoned school lot. And I would have my 8 minutes. This is my story.

I don't know what the hell your story is. But in my case, after I drink about a half an hour, something happens to me. And I have about 8 minutes where everything in my life is all right.

Where I am enough for about 8 minutes. And then I would all the years that I was in and out of AA, a loser, I never once told you about the 8 minutes, not once. And then I would go home and destroy my family.

I really start drinking when I would get home and Pat this afternoon was talking about our five kids I'm a raging alcoholic. I'm a violent alcoholic, an abusive alcoholic, and a mean, satirical, bad drunk. And I got drunk the last 7 or 8 years every night at home.

And I turned that house into an insane asylum. I was raised in an insane asylum. I thought my folks were bad, I made them look good.

The late '60s now, three of my kids are in high school in the late '60s. Oldest son is working his way through high school as a hashish salesman. Never had to give him any spending money, I'll guarantee you that.

Hit him up for a fifth of alcohol once a week. Yeah, Dad, what do you need? Had hair down to his butt and his head went like this all the time.
