Johnny T. came into treatment with a plan: use his roughest sawmill language to get kicked out and prove to his family he’d tried. In this AA speaker tape, he describes talking down to other patients like animals, nearly alienating everyone in the facility — until another man confronted him with brutal honesty and a moment of spiritual surrender that changed everything.

Quick Summary

AA speaker Johnny T. recounts his first week in treatment, where he deliberately antagonized patients and staff with crude behavior designed to get himself expelled. When his verbal tactics backfired against another patient who matched his language, a confrontation led to his first genuine admission of hopelessness and a prayer asking God for help. This turning point marks the beginning of his acceptance that he couldn’t stay sober alone.

Episode Summary

Johnny T. walks into treatment with a clear exit strategy. He’s learned his language at a sawmill — raw, abrasive, designed to shock and dominate — and he figures if he treats the other patients like dogs and talks down to them relentlessly, the staff will have no choice but to kick him out. Then he can go home and tell his family he tried. Simple.

It works on the patients. They avoid him. He’s isolated them exactly as planned. But the nurses and doctors? They’ve heard it all before. Language like that doesn’t faze them.

After about a week of this calculated cruelty, Johnny’s made himself miserable and taken half the treatment center with him. Then a new guy arrives — another man, another truck driver who speaks the same rough language Johnny does. This man, Don, knows the sawmill talk even better than Johnny. When Johnny tries his usual routine, Don fires it right back at him. For the first time, Johnny meets someone who won’t be intimidated or pushed around by crude words.

Later that evening, something unexpected happens. Don approaches Johnny and tells him plainly: “You are the most miserable sob I ever seen.” And then he asks for five minutes.

What Johnny does next surprises even himself. He follows Don into his room. Don tells him to get on his knees, and Johnny does it. Don reads something from the Bible — Johnny can’t even remember what it was — but then Don grabs his hands and speaks directly into the moment: “Johnny Tatum, for the first time in your life, you admit you are a hopeless drunk and without God’s help, you cannot get out of here sober.”

And in that moment, for the first time, Johnny says it out loud: “God, I am a drunk and I cannot stay sober without you.”

This is the core of an AA speaker’s account of hitting bottom while surrounded by people trying to help. Johnny’s story cuts through the noise about what real surrender looks like. It’s not a gradual awakening or a slow acceptance. For him, it was brutal honesty from another man, followed by desperation on his knees, followed by an admission he couldn’t force himself to make alone. The moment Don puts Johnny’s powerlessness into words — and makes him say it back — something breaks open. The plan to escape treatment falls away. The armor of crude language stops working. What’s left is a man admitting he’s hopeless and asking for divine help.

This AA meeting moment shows how the rooms work when they work best: one human being refusing to let another person hide anymore, and pointing them toward surrender.

They put me in that treatment center and I had a plan, boys. I figured I'd get kicked out of there and I can go back home say, "Look, I tried it. I did my best." And everything like that.

And so this was my plan. I was going to use that old sawmill language on those people to the point that they ran me out of there. All right?

And it worked on the patients. I talked to them like they was dogs. Okay?

And I'd walk to one side room and they'd walk to the other dog on side room. I treated them like they were dogs. Let me tell you something.

I learned the English language at a sawmill. All right. And that's a heck of a place to learn it.

And it worked. But it didn't work on the nurses and the doctors. They were kind of used to language like that.

I was in there about a week and I had just about made everybody in there mad at me. And a guy named Don, a black guy named Don came in there. He walked in there as a new guy, this new meat.

This is my ticket out of here. And I talked to Don like he was a dog. Don talked to me back like I was a dog.

Come to find out, Don was a truck driver. He knew the language better than I did. He called me names I ain't never been called before.

Well, I went out of my way and he went his way. And later on that evening, Don came to me. He said, "You are the most miserable sob I ever seen." I said some nice words to Don.

He said, "Will you give me five minutes of your time?" I said, "Sure." And I don't know why I did this, y'all. I went in Don's room. He said, "Get on your knees." And I got on my knees and Don read something out of the Bible and I don't know what it was.

I don't know what it was. And he grabbed my hands and he said, "Johnny Tatum, for the first time in your life, you admit you are hopeless drunk and without God's help, you cannot get out of here sober." And for the first time in my life, one week in that treatment center, I said, "God, I am a drunk and I cannot stay sober without you.
