After 19 years sober with a job, house, and family, Forrest S. felt he’d outgrown the program. In this AA speaker tape, he walks through the moment his pride convinced him that AA was spiritual kindergarten and how that decision nearly cost him everything—and what it took to come back to Step 1 with genuine humility.

Quick Summary

Forrest S., 19 years sober with a stable life and career, decided AA was beneath him and left the program, convinced he could work a spiritual program elsewhere. An AA speaker reflecting on how ego and self-sufficiency masked a misunderstanding of Step 1 and powerlessness. His story shows how early recovery success can become a trap when gratitude and surrender are replaced by pride and the belief that he’d finally “arrived.”

Episode Summary

Forrest S. opens with a striking contradiction: a man with nearly two decades of sobriety, a corporate job, a new car, a house, and a child, looking back at the moment he decided he was done with AA. Not because he was relapsing or struggling, but because he’d convinced himself he’d outgrown it.

The picture he paints of where he started is stark. He literally crawled out of a dumpster. He lived on the streets, sneaking into construction sites for showers, stealing food or fishing it out of trash cans. That was the reality of his active addiction. And then, through the program and the fellowship, his life changed completely.

But somewhere around the 19-year mark, Forrest S. made a decision: AA was spiritual kindergarten. He had arrived. He’d proven it. So he decided to leave the program and work a spiritual practice elsewhere. The irony—and this is where the title “Such High Moral Fiber” lands—is that a man who once had nothing, who literally lived in an abandoned building that was barely better than a dumpster, had become someone with “such high moral fiber” that he was above the rooms now.

For about six months, he maintained sobriety while trying to work this “higher” spiritual path. Then someone came into his life—a woman who did yoga, who represented that different spiritual direction he’d chosen. And in that moment, Forrest S. found himself face-to-face with the core issue: he was free to go anywhere he wanted, as long as he was working a spiritual program. But in that freedom, he was already twisting things, already bending the principles to fit what he wanted rather than what he needed.

This AA speaker tape is fundamentally about Step 1 and what it really means. Not just admitting powerlessness about alcohol—though that’s where it starts—but recognizing that the spiritual program of Alcoholics Anonymous isn’t a level you graduate from. Humility isn’t something you achieve and then move past. The talk captures that precise moment when success and stability become the very things that blind someone to their actual condition. A man with all the material markers of recovery, but spiritually drifting, convinced that his moral fiber was so solid now that he could navigate the rest on his own.

The honesty here is the gift. Forrest S. doesn’t hide behind his success or pretend his reasoning made sense. He lays out the self-deception plainly: the pride, the superiority, the belief that he’d somehow transcended the need for the basic spiritual principles that saved his life.

Notable Quotes

I crawled out of a dumpster living on the street. I had such high moral fiber.

I’d arrived now. I’m 19 years sober, man. I mean, I work in a corporate entity. I got a new car. I got a house. I’m raising a kid. I’ve arrived. I’m sorry y’all haven’t, but I’ve arrived.

I made a decision that AA was spiritual kindergarten and that I was going to go work the program somewhere else.

I’m free to go anywhere I want as long as I’m working a spiritual program. See, now I’m twisting in other stuff into new lines.

At some point after about 10 years sober, that first step really read to me. I admitted I was powerless because I didn't want to be part of the Wii anymore. Y'all didn't know what you're doing anyway.

I really didn't want to be anything to do with the Wii cuz y'all are crazy. Now, keep in mind, I crawled out of a dumpster living on the street. Literally, it was like an apartment that could have been a dumpster that was abandoned.

uh you know, thought we were pulling off magic because we'd sneak into construction sites to get showers. Uh you know, knew where to steal food that uh that hadn't quite been lost yet or or find food that had recently been put away in the trash can. I was literally living out.

So, you know, I me such high moral fiber. Um and I coming had decided you guys are nuts and uh cuz I'd arrived now. I'm 19 years sober, man.

I mean, I work in a corporate entity. I got a new car. I got a house.

I'm raising a kid. I've arrived. I'm sorry y'all haven't, but I've arrived.

You guys are crazy. And uh and so I made a decision that AA was spiritual kindergarten and that I was going to go work the program somewhere else. And so I left and I did that for about 6 months sober and then she showed up.

She did yoga. Yeah, that one. And uh and so now it was like, you know, I'm going to just I'm going to dabble a little cuz really I'm free to go anywhere I want as long as I'm working a spiritual program.

See, now I'm twisting in other stuff into new lines.
